Olympic Skateboarders Can Start on Skyline Drive
Skateboarders hurtling down Skyline Drive at 50 mph next weekend may be headed for the Olympics.
“The Port Jervis Acme DH Classic is the first U.S. sanctioned event for downhill skateboarding recognized by the U.S. Olympics committee,” said John Fletcher, USA Skateboarding event organizer. “There are two 180-degree switchback turns, one left, one right, at high speeds. People are coming from all over the country to do it. Port Jervis has become known for its hills.”
Longboard enthusiasts began using Skyline Dr. for the Acme Extreme Downhill race about eight years ago. Fletcher collaborated with the Outdoor Club of Port Jervis to set up this event, now 80% sold out, he said on Thursday. He noted that skateboarders who want to participate would be evaluated first, as safety is a priority.
Skateboarders will do practice runs on Aug. 6 and 7. The race is at noon on Aug. 8. Cost to race is $240
