Delaware Valley Action, to take the lead on WATER Not WAREHOUSE Yard Sign Project
Delaware Valley Action, Pike County's Local Indivisible Group, has stepped up to take the lead on this Yard Sign Project. Delaware Valley Action! is an IRS 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization.
They have purchased 250 double sided WATER Not WAREHOUSE yard signs to be dispersed in the Greater Milford Area.
Dear Readers - Heard that the LINK: Further information about the warehouse plan, Pike County Commissioners, the Pike County Economic Development Authority and Friends of the Milford Aquifer. is NOT Working. If that is the case here is that Information:
Now All Three Pike County Commissioners Are Singing from the Same Anti-Warehouse Hymnal Leaving the Pike County EDA Singing a Lonely Solo.
Last week, I went to both the Pike County; Commissioners 4/5/2023 and Economic Development Authority 4/4/2023 meetings. I came away both gratified and astonished.
Let's start with gratification. I asked all three Commissioners if they would publicly state if they would - "withdraw their support for the MEGA Warehouse Project." Ron Schmalzle said he "never supported it," Matt Osterberg said, "nor do I support it." Anthony Waldron said he "never supported it."
Finally, on April 5, 2023, that statement from each Commissioner is what Friends of the Milford Aquifer has been longing to hear for a year now, ever since the MEGA Warehouse project reared its ugly head.
I believe all are sincere now. However, because this is significant Political Progress, I think the voting public should ask them to put these statements in writing.
These formal statements can take Two forms:
1) A resolution that states that a MEGA Warehouse on our Drinking Water Aquifer does not fit into the County's Comprehensive plan and/or
2) A letter to Milford Twp. supporting the efforts of the MWA and Milford Borough in their efforts to oppose this MEGA Warehouse proposal.
You can send an EMAIL directly to the Pike County Commissioners asking for these formal statements:
If the Commissioners do NOT want to put these statements in writing, then I ask the voting public if they are acting as the top policy leaders for the county and following their own Comprehensive Plan that States: "The Plan sets policies and strategies for future growth and development and will help Pike County Municipalities manage growth, retain rural character, encourage more environmentally sound development, and protect the many natural, cultural, scenic and historic resources in the County as development occurs."
I also asked each Commissioner, "Do you personally believe in the SCIENCE in the Milford Water Authority's (MWA) Source Water Protection Plan (SWPP)?" All three Commissioners said - "YES."
The reason why I asked that particular question is that, just two blocks over at the Pike County Economic Development Authority where Matt Osterberg is the Chairman, Executive Director Mike Sullivan said just the OPPOSITE. At their April 4th monthly meeting, Mike Sullivan said these four things:
1) He does not believe in the credibility of the MWA SWPP to stop the warehouse project.
2) He will NOT STOP MARKETING and INVITING MEGA Warehouses and Support Services in and around the I 84/Rt.6 Interchange.
3) A, 434 THOUSAND Sq. Ft. Warehouse is NOT a MEGA Warehouse. and
4) "Says Who," that Warehouses cannot go on that site?
The Friends of the Milford Aquifer Response to Mr. Sullivan's Statements:
1) The MWA SWPP forms the SCIENTIFIC Foundation for the NO MEGA Warehouse ARGUMENT:
a) The Chemical Tracer Tests prove the direct connection between this warehouse site and the Milford Springs. These tests show how the water rapidly flows directly to the Milford Springs, in as little as 8 hrs.
b) This site is a SAND and GRAVEL Unconfined Aquifer that is very shallow and extremely Surface Water Pollution Sensitive.
2) There must be a massive failure to communicate between the Commissioners and the Pike County EDA, an arm of the Commissioner's Office, if Mr. Sullivan continues to MARKET and INVITE something the Commissioners are opposed to.
The Milford Distribution Center is 434 Thousand Sq. Ft. large. That is over two times the minimum definition of a MEGA Warehouse - starting at 200 Thousand Sq. Ft.
4) "Says Who?" Mr. Sullivan asked, "Who is against this development site? You and Peter Pinchot?" I said there are many: the MWA, Milford Borough, the Milford Twp. Planning Commission, the 250 members of Friends of the Milford Aquifer, The Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Damascus Citizens for Sustainability, Air Soil and Water, and many many others in the Community.
5) Mr. Sullivan is an affable man who believes it is his mission to bring jobs to Pike County. I believe that is true, but you must bring these jobs in accordance with Science, County and Municipal Comprehensive Plan goals, and community norms. He and I agreed to disagree - and we shook hands, each vowing that the best argument will win.
Political and Community Action:
A) Email Mr. Sullivan to show him the widespread disapproval for this MEGA Warehouse on our Drinking Water Aquifer. Water Rights are supported across every political persuasion, religion, and class. You can contact the Pike County EDA at: mike@edapikepa.org and/or tammy@edapikepa.org
B) Milford Boro. Residents please attend the Monday April, 17, 2023, 7pm Milford Borough Council Meeting, to support the council members in writing a letter to the Pike County Planning Commission and Milford Twp. in support of their efforts to CORRECT the flaws of the Milford Twp. Shepstone Wellhead Protection Ordinance.
C) MEGA Warehouse - LVL Engineering will continue to present their AMENDED Application to the Milford Twp. Planning Commission on Tue. April 25, 2023, at 7pm. Save this Date.
D) The MEGA Warehouse Developers asked for ANOTHER EXTENSION to their PUBLIC HEARING before the Milford Twp. Supervisors until MONDAY MAY 22, 2023. This is the most important date to save.
CONCLUSION:
So that leaves The Pike EDA out there all alone (to my knowledge) as the last remaining local political entity that supports this MEGA Warehouse project.
Remember, progress on issues as important as this take - TIME, PUBLIC PARTICIPATION, and PERSEVERANCE. This is a critical COMMUNITY PROBLEM that needs an urgent COMMUNITY RESPONSE. We need all concerned voters and community members to - HELP in any way you can. If we continue to have only a few activists show up/zoom in at these critical meetings - then we will not be successful in our mission.
I have faith in our community to successfully advocate for our Drinking Water Source and protect the Health and Safety of our Beautiful Pike County now and into the FUTURE.
