Theresa Brown: Delaware Valley School District Candidate
1. What circumstance(s) prompted you to run for the school board?
Please be specific.
Parents, grandparents, children, and taxpayers throughout Westfall and Pike counties value, love, and depend on the quality of DVSD schools. But things are changing and the community is concerned. Everyday, I hear from someone seeking to pull their children out of DVSD. Friends, neighbors, and school employees encouraged me to get involved. I began attending Board meetings and was alarmed by the lack of transparency and the exclusion of parents in decision-making processes. I knew I had to step up and do what I can to make a difference.
2. What experience, skills and/or education prepares you for a role on
the school board? Please be specific.
I have more than 25 years experience working as Department Head and Faculty in Higher Ed. I hold five college degrees, including a Master’s in Higher Ed and a Master’s in Law –I worked in the education system, understand the regulations, and I know the Constitution. At the college where I worked, every program placed under my leadership quickly shifted from poor and failing to highest in student retention and success. Because as a leader I am a servant first. My goal is to engage the people I support, whether they be students, staff, teachers, or taxpayers.
3. What would you like to change if elected? Please be specific.
Transparency and communication are essential. Rather than excluding the public from decision making processes, we need to embrace and encourage parental engagement in curriculum, books, and budgetary practices, including administrative salaries and hiring. Drug, alcohol, and bullying problems should be exposed to create awareness and work on solutions together.
4. What would you like to accomplish as a school board member? Please be specific.
We need to restore pride, a sense of community, and respect between administrators, teachers, staff, students, parents, and citizens. Instruction should focus on academic excellence, the trades, teaching children right from wrong and to be productive members of society.
