Port Jervis Third Ward Common Council Candidate Jackie Smith, Democrat
1. What circumstance prompted your interest in running for a seat on the Common Council? Please be specific.
The pandemic helped me realize that I would like to get more involved in our community. My Dad was a volunteer firefighter at Engine Company No. 4 for many years, which is well out of my wheelhouse. Instead, I turned my attention to the Common Council and the various sub-committees that the Council is comprised of. I received an endorsement from the Democratic Committee and the opportunity to run under the Port Jervis First line. Since then, I have attended numerous committee meetings and Council meetings to learn how our city government functions.
2. What experience and/or education prepares you for the position? Please be specific.
I intend to use the knowledge and experiences I've gained from various jobs I've worked, responsibilities I've been entrusted with, my post-secondary education, right on down to my high school Government and Economics classes (thank you, Mr. Birmingham) to fulfill my duties as a council member. I learned problem solving techniques from years of pharmacy work, bookkeeping experience from working in an architectural office, and money management from my position in the special education office at the school district. I will use all of these skills to make tactical decisions that will protect our tax payers and benefit our community.
3. What would you like to change in Port Jervis if elected? Why? How would you go about it? Please be specific.
I would like to change the perception of Port Jervis. We are fortunate to have many great outdoor amenities and events here. We have many awesome volunteer groups in our community. This past summer a group of volunteers gathered in the downtown area to beautify and maintain the flower beds. The Outdoor Club works tirelessly improving our parks and recreational areas. The Tourism Board organizes many events throughout the year. I want the Council to promote these events making our residents aware of the opportunities available, and show there are great things here in Port Jervis. Our slate has discussed generating a quarterly newsletter for our citizens.
4. What would you like to accomplish if elected? How would you go about it? Please be specific.
I would like increased communication with our residents. I want to revive the Neighborhood Watch program. This is an important resource for our area, providing a good way for people to get to know one another and communicate. I want to conduct quarterly check-ins throughout the third ward by going door-to-door. I want open conversations with the constituents and to ensure their voices are heard. This hands-on approach can help resolve issues and boost participation in our community. If elected, I will serve the people of Port Jervis to the best of my ability while fulfilling my commitment to the voters.
