Port Jervis Proposed 3.52% Tax Increase with $3 Monthly Sewer Fee Hike Announced
The outcome of pandemic economic storms added up to a 3.52% proposed tax increase for Port Jervis, Mayor Kelly Decker announced at the Common Council meeting on Monday. He estimated that the average monthly tax increase would be about $4.40 for residents now paying about $1500 per year. With department requests and other expenses, the increase would have been 17%, but some items were denied, including Police Chief William Worden’s request to hire a second lieutenant, Decker said, because that would have increased taxes by 5%.
Another three dollars monthly will be added to sewer fees, he said.
“We have a sewer consent order by the state to continue sewer relining,” said Decker. “Grants have helped, and we will continue to request them, but we also needed to take a $20 million dollar rolling bond, to continue relining, that needs to be paid back.”
Budget workshops have been scheduled, where city employees, elected officials and residents can state their cases for budget changes:
Nov. 17, after the 6 p.m. Finance Committee meeting
Nov. 29, 6:30 p.m.
Dec. 2, 6:30 p.m.
Meetings will be in the Common Council chambers, City Hall, 20 Hammond St., Port Jervis
