Port Jervis Fourth Ward Common Council Candidate Stan Siegel, Democrat
1. What circumstance prompted your interest in running for a seat on the Common Council? Please be specific.
I have always been actively involved in community activities, including youth sports coaching, scouting, as an active volunteer fire department & fire police member, social organizations, veteran events and issues, etc. So, when I was first asked to run for Councilman-at-Large, 22-years ago through my present seat, that became an extension to what I enjoy doing. Serving as as a council member for 20 years has given me an additional opportunity to serve my fellow residents and help them with their concerns and needs. This is very fulfilling to me.
2. What experience and/or education prepares you for the position? Please be specific.
Back when I first ran for public office, my college degree in Organizational Management helped me balance the needs of the community and my own life. I enjoy helping others and have a good grasp on how to get things done in an organized, proper way.
At this point, my years of experience as Councilman & Councilman-at-Large have taken me through most situations that a councilman can encounter. I know the issues, ways to resolve them, and where to reach out for help when needed, I have served on every city committee and helped create laws to help our residents.
3. What would you like to change in Port Jervis if elected? Why? How would you go about it? Please be specific.
One person can’t change much without the concurrence of other council people. I do have a list of issues that I feel need to be addressed:
1. Absentee Landlords and less than adequate housing for our residents needs greater attention and effort.
2. A central fire station would save a great deal of money and make the fire department more efficient.
3. Additionally, one firehouse could be converted to a needed Senior Center.
4. I will continue to keep a close eye on city financial matters and be their “eyes and ears” in monitoring how their money is spent.
4. What would you like to accomplish if elected? How would you go about it? Please be specific.
1. Quality of Life issues are my number 1 concern. I tour our city nearly every day to report and work on Quality of Life issues.
2. I will continue to advocate for seniors, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and all Port residents, staying involved with issues to help them.
3. I will continue to seek transportation options to transport residents around the city, and to neighboring communities.
4. I will continue to seek an Ethics Board and transparency & communication in city government.
5. I will collaborate with my fellow council members on quality of life and other issues in our city.
