Village of Warwick residents and visitors include a number of storied war veterans whom village officials plan to honor in Veteran’s Memorial Park with the creation of what is to be called Patriot’s Path. This project is under way and its completion will coincide with the 250th anniversary of United States independence.
According to Mayor Michael J. Newhard, the project’s vision is to create a ten-foot-wide meandering pedestrian path through the park that commemorates the village’s veterans and explains the history of the village through major military eras in United States history. Each station on the path will focus on a particular era and the war that occurred then. The intent of this project is to tell the story of the Village of Warwick chronologically by intertwining history, landscape and veteran ventures to create an immersive educational experience that leverages the appeal of the park, new sustainable plantings and narrative signs along the path.
This project is being funded by a $1,000,000 grant from New York State that Senator James Skoufis helped obtain. The village has submitted an RFP for the design of the Patriot Path, and KaN, a landscape design firm, has been selected as architect. Mayor Newhard said he hopes to have preliminary designs by this spring.
Guiding the project is a village task force composed of mostly veterans who have met twice already. Many decisions for this project remain to be made.
The existing Veteran’s Memorial Park is already popular. Even on a recent cold, blustery, overcast winter day, many people walked and played with pets and children there.
