“I Was There”--Original, Immersive Greenwood Lake Theater Production
Stroll through the event on March 16, 1 p.m., at Church of the Good Shepherd
The production of “I Was There,” on March 16, is a reenactment of election day in Greenwood Lake in 1924 in an immersive setting. The story takes place on the grounds of, and inside, the historic Church of the Good Shepherd. The audience can get right in the middle of arguments and shenanigans that took place in the spring of 1924. Everyone who attends will move freely throughout the space to experience the story in whatever order they choose. It’s a chance to be a part of the story, rather than just watching from a distance. Take a break from the performance and drink in the 1920s era tavern alongside the fellow villagers (drink tickets available at the bar).
Never been to an immersive show? No problem! Check out the list of FAQ’s so you know what to expect:
Does this mean that I will be dragged up on into the show?
A: No! Audience is considered an integral part of the world we are creating, and, for that reason, an actor may try to converse or engage with you in some way. If you are comfortable, feel free to play along. If you are not, and would rather just be an observer, they will take the hint.
Q: If I can choose any direction to move through the space, how will I know which way is best?
A: This show is designed specifically for you to go any direction and explore. Every single audience member will have a unique experience. Go whichever way seems most interesting to you! One method that can be helpful for first timers is to choose a specific character and to follow them throughout their story.
Q: If many things are happening at the same time, how will I see every single thing that happens?
A: You won’t! That is the fun of this style. Everyone gets to have their own experience. When you compare notes with your friends and family afterwards, you will all have seen a slightly different version of the show. People often return to see shows done in this style multiple times- to have a different perspective every time.
Q: What if a character pulls me aside, or tries to hand me something?
A: Go along with them! They might tell you a secret, or hand you an important document.
Q: Can I touch things?
A: There will be things in the space that are absolutely meant for you to touch/read/etc. So go for it! But not the actors- keep your interactions with them verbal, not physical.
Q: Is the show outdoors?
A: The show primarily takes place indoors, though music and adult refreshments will be outside.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Whatever will keep you comfortable outdoors on a March afternoon! And good, comfortable shoes. The style of the performance means that you will likely walk around a bit.
