Organic Vegetable Garden Wisdom
Two workshops will instruct on soil preparation as well as vegetable growing on April 15.
How to grow organic vegetables in soil that fortifies them will be the focus of two workshops hosted by Orange Environment, Inc. on Saturday, April 15, at Warwick Valley Community Center. The “Practice Sustainable Living” event will include instruction on home composting and soil conservation as well as organic gardening.
The morning session, from 9:30 to 12:30, covers “Growing Organic Vegetables From Seed to Harvest” for a fee of $35. Topics include germinating seeds, improving soil for planting organically, succession planting, irrigation methods, using natural methods for pest, disease, and weed control, crop rotation, companion planting, container and herb gardening. Also included will be a demo on starting vegetables in the spring.
The afternoon session, from 1:30–4:30, covers “Home Composting, Water and Soil Conservation” for a fee of $35. Composting is a way to recycle organic waste from kitchen scraps and return nutrients back to the soil. Topics include: making compost, exploring the soil/food web, basic ingredients and composting techniques, establishing and maintaining a composting system, types of composters and how to build your own, using compost and compost tea in your garden, how to use less water in your garden, building infiltration swales to conserve water and prevent erosion, soil fertility and soil amendments. A demonstration will be included on how to construct an A -Frame to define contour lines and build compost bins.
Instructor Keith Riddick is an expert gardener with extensive training in vegetable gardening. Register at http://orangeenvironment.square.site/. If you sign up for both sessions, pay only $60.
