Deerpark Planning Board Hears More of Quarry Management Route 6 Plan
Substitute for $1.4 million retaining wall proposed.
By David Ofshinsky
The proposed expansion of Quarry Management’s Rt. 6 site in Deerpark was before the Planning Board on Wednesday, June 25.
This was a follow-up to the April 23 Public Hearing on the proposed amendments to the existing site plan for lot consolidation and zoning changes.
The Quarry Management proposal calls for consolidating the 3 lots on Lime Kin Rd. that they have acquired since the start of the project with their existing Rt. 6 lots.
Quarry Management will then grade out an enormous amount of fill that has been placed on the property. This will avoid building the $1.4 million retaining wall that is in the current plans. The lot consolidation would also automatically change the zoning on the Lime Kiln Rd. properties from Residential to Interchange Business, the same as the Rt. 6 lots.
John Fuller, Quarry Management’s engineer for the project, addressed questions and concerns that were raised at the Public Hearing.
In response to the questions, Fuller said that the approved use of the site, supply yard and light manufacturing, is not changing.
Fuller noted that the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR), State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) requirements all have been met.
Fuller said that ‘rumble strips’ have been placed at the Rt. 6 exit to help remove dirt from the truck tires before they leave the site, and that a street sweeper is now in use to further clean the roadway.
He also said that the large pile of fill that is there now is 50 to 60 feet higher than the final elevation of 680 feet, the height of the existing Rt. 6 lot area. The fill will be used to grade down an 80 foot slope towards Lime Kiln Rd. and the area will then be restored with vegetation.
Fuller said that while piles of materials stored at the site may reach 30 feet in height, there will no longer be a huge pile of fill. He provided renderings of what the site is anticipated to look like when everything is done.
Todd Maurizzo, representing Fusco Engineering, the firm contracted by Deerpark to oversee building and zoning matters, requested an updated wetlands delineation map and a survey showing the proposed consolidated lots.
Questions from Board Attorney Glen Plotsky, Esq. who was not present, were sent via email to the Board. Chairman Robert Vicaretti requested that they be added to the public record. They were not fully read at the meeting, so what Plotsky requested is not known.
The Planning Board provided no date for voting on the proposal.
