Crosswalk, Orange Square and Bath House Improvements Coming to Port Jervis
Aided by State Senator James Skoufis, funding for several projects has been approved.
Money for improvements has been flowing in Port Jervis lately, launching new visions and fixes. In addition to the $10 million from the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative currently generating an assortment of project proposals, at a recent Common Council meeting, Mayor Kelly Decker announced grants facilitated by State Senator James Skoufis that will fund several improvements.
Visible in numerous places that children frequent will be “stamped” crosswalks , at $30,000 each, with flashing traffic lights and crossing buttons, at $7000 each. Among their locations will be near Hess’s Deli on Kingston Ave.; East Main St. near the elementary school, West Main St. near the towpath to the D&H Canal and several other places.
“Traditionally crosswalks are painted each year, and many times, if that’s done in the spring, they’re faded by fall,” said Decker. “Stamped crosswalks are impressed into the pavement, making them long lasting, and they also have a reflective element that allows the crosswalks to be very noticeable, so drivers are aware that pedestrians may be crossing. They are numerous throughout the city - many in areas where children will cross, especially while walking to school.”
West End Beach facilities will also get some attention. The bath houses will be “updated” and painted and get new equipment, such as toilets and sinks, Decker said. The parking lot will get concrete curbing to prevent erosion.
The crosswalks and West End Beach improvements will begin in the next few months. Also on the horizon, not finalized, Decker said, are Orange Square Park improvements, including lighting, a stage and sound system.
Decker is also seeking funding to replace some city signage with more attractive versions with stone and wood bases, he said.
