Altered Nine Jazz Improvisers Coming to UpFront
Port Jervis. The group will play at UpFront Exhibition Space on May 25.
The Altered Nine is a nonet of improvising musicians under the direction of Jon Leonard. A Hudson Valley based jazz nonet, the Altered Nine aims for improvisation within the framework of colorful arrangements. While comparisons to “big band” are apt, Alt 9’s philosophy is to showcase a player’s expressive individuality, and the result is as much “enhanced combo”as it is “small big band.
Their Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus repertoire draws heavily from the “post bebop”and “progressive” jazz eras, including the music of Miles and John Coltrane, to name a few, following in the tradition of “drawing from within”, practiced by these jazz giants.
Original material from Alt 9 members is also featured. Members of the Altered Nine are established players and educators, active with numerous creative endeavors of their own, throughout the Greater Hudson Valley and Tri-State region.
